Powdered Coconut Sugar

May I present to you all...Powdered Coconut Sugar.  This here may likely change your world folks.  It's a great icing sugar substitute for those that are on a low-sugar or refined sugar-free diet.  I use it in lots of things, from pie crusts, to squares, to my Coconut Whipped Cream , to icing cupcakes.  It's really a life saver.  One thing I really want to show people through this little recipe Blog is that just because you choose to make healthier choices, doesn't mean you need to limit the possibilities of what you can make AT ALL.  You just need to learn how to think outside the box and find the appropriate substitutes.  There truly is a healthy substitute or replacement for everything out there, and this is one of them.  So without further ado, here's how you can make your own powdered sugar substitute... In the photo here I used a combination of coconut sugar and minute tapioca, because that's what I had in my cupboard.  If you'r...

Garden Veggie Dip

This dip is amazingly delicious and can be made in 5 minutes.  It's also sugar-free, oil-free, dairy-free and entirely plant based.  I love it because it helps me use up my leftovers.  One of the staples at our house recently has been Cashew Cream.  I LOVE it, but I don't ever like it to sit in my fridge for more than 5 (ish) days.  Today I decided I needed to use it up, so I made this veggie dip out of my leftovers.  I like the recipe from Oh She Glows .  So, for my Garden Veggie Dip, I just used 1 cup of Cashew Cream and added a few spices.  I recommend letting it chill in the fridge for an hour to allow the flavours to blend, but we also eat it right away and it's still delicious!  Easy breezy.  Here's the recipe... Surly's Sourdough

I'm super excited to bring you this recipe, and long time friend of mine! Now to introduce you to the star of the show!  Meet Surly, our one and only pet.  She's a little moody, and she might come across as kind of a snob, because, well she kind of it.  She's either bubbling with pessimism or aloof and sad.  When she gets sad, we feed her, and she's back to her sour old self again in no time.  You might ask, why would you keep a pet like that around?  Well I'll tell you why...because she has something wonderful to contribute (although she doesn't have much choice in the matter).  If you catch her at just the right time (usually when she's in the very worst mood), and when combined with the right ingredients, Surly contributes just the right amount of sour to our lives.  This happens about twice a week, and is well worth the crap we have to put up with from her in the meantime.  So without further ado, I present to you Surly's Sou...

"Cheesy" Italian Pizza Buns

These Pizza Buns save my sanity Every. Single. Day.  I make them every 2.5 - 3 weeks, and it keeps me from having to make sandwiches every day for my 3 school aged kids.  Life Saver, I'm tellin' ya.  I've been making them for close to 5 years now, and I'm still going strong, because it really is soooo worth it.  I just store them in the freezer, and pop a few out every morning (or put some in the fridge the night before) as needed. For a long time I made these pizza buns with regular all purpose flour, which admittedly works great, and results in larger, puffier Pizza Buns...but as I'm trying to steer clear of refined flour these days, I've been making them lately with my own ground whole wheat (I use hard white wheat). After you've ground your wheat, measure and dump all the dough ingredients into the inner compartment of a bread machine. Select the dough setting, and press start.  My machine takes about 2 hours to complete the dough c...

Cozy Cauliflower Soup

We are used to snow where we live.  We're used to cold, and we know how to drive on icy roads.  We're Canadian, it comes with the territory.  Today though...was absolutely treacherous outside.  We had a big blizzard, the roads were sheer ice, couldn't see 2 feet in front of us because it was a total whiteout.  School busses were cancelled, and I was home reading about how crazy the weather was and worrying about my husband making it home in the storm.  He had to work a couple hours later than normal to meet a deadline and would be driving home on the highways after dark (he commutes 30 mins into the city).  Well, needless to say, we needed some comfort food, and soup fit the bill perfectly.  I thought it would be a good time to take a few pictures and document my cauliflower soup recipe, because staying busy keeps my mind off my nerves! This is my #1 Go-To soup.  Everyone in my family loves it, and I love that, because getting all...
